Five ‘secrets’ to transforming your life with journaling

Something astonishing happens when we sit down, pick up a pen and physically write down our thoughts and feelings on paper. When we see our ideas and dreams there in black and white, there is a powerful transformation in our mindset, our attitude to life, and in our whole being.

That may sound pretty dramatic, but it is something I have seen for myself time and time again through my coaching sessions and workshops. People who believed that they would never in their wildest dreams be able to accomplish the things they wanted, who believed that they were not good enough, that success was something that happened to other people – I have seen those people accomplish things that they never thought were possible through the power of writing. And it can work for you too.

The first ‘secret’ I’m going to share with you is about belief and it’s this:

1 – With just a pen and paper, YOU have the power to make transformational changes in your life.

Wherever you are in your life right now, by making time to write every day, you CAN design and create a life that makes you happy and fulfilled.

So how can you do that?

Before I answer that question I have a question for you. When did you last sit down with a pen and paper and write about your thoughts and ideas?

I’m guessing for most people it’s a long time. Some people who come on my coaching programmes have never really done this. We have no problem writing down our to-do lists each day or scribbling down our shopping lists for the week. But thoughts and feelings about our life? Who has time for that? And where would we even start?

I’m going to tell you – we start by making time and space each day to sit down and write.

Which brings me onto the second ‘secret’:

2 – Writing is the key to clarity.

You don’t have to have all the answers before you start. The important thing is that you start.

If you make time and space each day to sit down and write I can guarantee amazing things will happen. If you want to unravel your thoughts and discover what you really want from life then writing is your most powerful tool. It is better than just thinking about what you want, it is better than talking about what you want and, this is the part you may not know, it is better than typing out what you want on your computer keyboard or touch screen device. Writing by hand using a pen and paper is your number one most powerful way to get clarity.

Now I know that not everyone enjoys writing, and some of you may down right hate it. Maybe you have been turned off writing by your experience of education, maybe you’ve been criticised in the past and you’ve convinced yourself this is not something you can do. I have coached people who were worried that their writing would not be good enough, they got really stressed and anxious about things like spelling and grammar.

I want to assure you right now that none of these things matter. You are free to write how YOU want to write. No one will read what you have written unless you want them to. You will never be judged, edited or critiqued. You can express yourself the way you want to because this is about YOU and for YOU. You have the power to make transformational changes if you just take a deep breath and write.

Now I’ll let you into ‘secret’ number three which is this:

3 – Writing can change the way you think and feel about your life.

It may be surprising to you that something as simple as putting a pen to paper can change our thoughts and feelings, but it is absolutely possible. I’m not just talking about changing your mood for a little while. I’m not talking about the short creative buzz you get from getting something down on the page. I am talking about radical, lasting and positive change.

In my Write Your Life programme I walk you through daily writing actions that are specifically designed to shift your mindset and change the way you think about yourself and your life. This is probably the single biggest transformation that I see in people who take part in my coaching sessions and workshops. Because once you shift your mindset and begin to believe in yourself and your infinite capabilities, anything is possible. Success can be yours.

Which brings me on to secret number four:

4 – If you want to succeed, write down your goals.

We all have thoughts, dreams and ideas about how we want our life to be, but very few of us actually write them down. People who write down their goals according to some studies are over 40 per cent more likely to achieve them than people who just think about or talk about their goals.

Let me just pause for a moment and clarify something here. When I talk about success I mean what success looks like for YOU. We don’t all want the same things, and too often we’re influenced by other people’s expectations or we’re held back by deeply entrenched beliefs about what we’re capable of. Seeing past all that and getting to the truth of what makes YOU truly happy and fulfilled is one of the first things you need to do.

In the Write Your Life programme I can walk you through my proven process for really digging deep and uncovering the things that are most important to you in all areas of your life. Then I show you how to turn those thoughts, dreams and ideas into crystal clear goals with an action plan to take you step by step from where you are now to where you want to be.

Have you ever looked through a telescope or a pair of binoculars at something far away and the image is blurred? You can’t see the details of what you’re looking at until you adjust the lens to bring it into sharp focus. Your goals are your dreams brought into sharp focus, you just need to make that adjustment and the Write Your Life programme gives you tools and techniques to get that sharp ‘high definition’ focus.

Which brings me to the fifth and final secret I want to share with you and it’s pretty incredible:

5 – If we write in a focused way every day we can make success a habit.

Now just stop and think about how awesome that is for a minute. Imagine being so used to achieving the things you want that it becomes your new normal. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Well I can tell you for a fact that it IS possible.

Something truly astonishing happens when we make time to write in a focused way every day. We can actually re-programme our brains to seek out opportunities that will bring us the happiness and fulfilment we desire – we actually re-wire our minds for success. The key to this is developing daily writing habits. In the Write Your Life programme I share my own personal daily journaling formula that can help you make success your new normal.
